Erin and I were reminded today that when it rains, internet tends to be swept away with the dirt. Apparently it is back now, so hopefully it will last long enough for me to post this.
Today was a day to catch up on things. I got up, did an online yoga video, and walked (with my mask to protect from the pollution) to Anomali Coffee, where Erin and I spent a good four hours writing e-mails, applying to jobs and internships, and feeling like we could be in the US (Soft John Mayer and Spice Girls in the background? Check. Good coffee as well as iced blended sugar-loaded drinks? Check. Soaking wet bathrooms low on TP? Wake up, you're in Indonesia).
While there, I inquired about buying beans, but they charge $20/kilo! I tried explaining to them that it is cheaper in the US to buy Indonesian beans but the girl didn't understand or didn't care. Hopefully I'll make it to the mysterious wholesale market tomorrow and find some deals!
I think I finally figured ABRA out (shout-out to Brian and Stevie for helping me with this!), put in my bids, and washed my hands of it (until I check to see hoe they went Monday). I also finally fixed the NYU mail forwarding that hasn't worked properly since the move to Gmail. Check out a pic of the shop as well as my unhealthy-but-delicious drink:
Erin and I then walked to a sandwich place I had passed on my walk up, Sandwich 71 and enjoyed a chicken pesto sandwich (me) and a Thai chicken wrap (her). The food was pretty decent, but unfortunately, the rain started just before we finished. The parking attendant hailed a cab for us as well as escorted us by umbrella to the cab, but we still got soaked. Because of the one-way street, the cab also completely retraced our steps and we found ourselves driving past the coffee shop on the drive back! We also had quite a time trying to go the two feet from the cab to the carport overhand in front of our kost, and both managed to get soaked in the process, as well as soaking the inside of the cab.
So much for the wayang show--we might try to go for tomorrow's festivities if we aren't too tired from shopping. Until then, check out this picture from last night's dinner at Super Steak--the father gave those of us who hadn't been there last time copies of one of his books, and would not let us leave (I think we were the best listeners he's entertained in a while). After an hour of chatting with him after our meal was finished, he let us go after inviting us to his birthday party this weekend through the car window.
I apologize if this is disjointed--the call to prayer today involves a very fiery sermon from an Imam--usually it is just singing. I hope everything is okay! If you haven't yet, check out my Sabah Part 1 post below--FINALLY written. Adios!
